About City

Ahmedabad (also called Ahmadabad or Amdavad) is India's sixth-largest city (population: 6.5 million) and the country's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was founded by Muslim ruler Sultan Ahmed Shah. It is the commercial centre of Gujarat, though it is not the state capital, which is 30 kilometres to the north in Gandhinagar. Even though it is not well known as a "tourist" destination, it is well worth a visit. In reality, the fact that there are fewer tourists here also results in a friendlier welcome. Gujaratis are also renowned for their friendliness.

To the east of Sabarmati, the city was founded on flat, spacious plains. It was made up of the Bhadra Fort, a little-known fortification. The city fort wall was surrounded by 12 gates. Ahmedabad continued to grow in every direction, with new areas on both sides of the river being developed with well-planned beautiful houses, lakes, and mosques.

So, unlike most other major Indian cities, Ahmedabad is not by default an English-speaking city - but language is never an issue because it has emerged as Gujarat's foreign trading centre, where almost everyone speaks English. Gujarati is the local language. With most people, you can get by speaking Hindi or English. Even if you don't know any Indian languages, you'll be able to communicate with the locals.

Ahmedabad is one of India's most popular educational tourism destinations. The city's colleges cultivate the best talent in business and art, with educational centres like the National Institute of Design and the Indian Institute of Management. These two prestigious organisations have great architecture, manicured gardens, and well-stocked libraries, despite not being among Ahmedabad's most well-known tourist attractions. Ahmedabad is also attracting a number of industries. The city is Gujarat's largest business hub and a favourite among India's popular business giants. Ahmedabad is known around the world as the "Manchester of the East" because of its numerous textile mills.
